Princep Ghat (wharf) is one of the most beautiful landmarks in Calcutta, built on the banks of the river Ganges, in honour of the scholar James Prinsep. He was an English scholar, orientalist and antiquary. James was born in 1799 & had a short life of only forty years, dying in 1840. He served as an assay master in Calcutta as well as Beneras. In 1838 he left for England because of ill health. |
